Martha from Carrboro is an elderly widow who lives alone with no immediate family nearby. She also struggles with short-term memory loss associated with dementia. With care and support from two loving neighbors, Martha remains in her home independently.  But some everyday household activities are still quite dangerous–especially in the kitchen.

After talking with her caregivers and assessing the home, we found a way to help by installing a CookStop fire prevention device in Martha’s kitchen. CookStop uses motion sensor technology to automatically turn off an unattended stove. 

This safety measure may help Martha remain independent a little while longer. It also gives her and her caregivers better peace of mind. Finally, it’s a good example of how our Neighbor Care program works: delivering big results through simple fixes.
